Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games Strength-Sport System Delivers Records and Medals in Glasgow

Nigeria’s medal and record performances in Para powerlifting and weightlifting highlight the depth of the country’s strength-sport system.

Nigeria’s performances in Para powerlifting and weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games have reinforced the country’s reputation as one of Africa’s strongest nations in strength sports.

Nigerian athletes opened the competition with major results in Para powerlifting, including a women’s lightweight one-two and new records, before Rafiatu Folashade Lawal added further success in weightlifting.

The results point to more than isolated individual performances. Nigeria has developed a visible pipeline in events that reward technical preparation, coaching continuity and specialist athlete support.

Para powerlifting has been a particularly strong area for the country, with athletes such as Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Esther Nworgu contributing to a record of success at major international competitions. Lawal’s weightlifting performance further extended Nigeria’s strength-sport profile.

The challenge is whether this success is being converted into a broader domestic system. Sustainable gains will depend on access to equipment, athlete welfare, coaching pathways, sports science and competition opportunities beyond major international events.

Nigeria’s results also offer a wider lesson for African sport. Countries can build global competitiveness by concentrating resources in disciplines where they already have technical depth and a proven development base.
