AU Executive Council Opens With Development Financing and Water Security on the Agenda

The African Union’s Executive Council has opened its 49th Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa with development financing, water security, sanitation and Africa’s global positioning among the central issues before foreign ministers.

The meeting brings together ministers from AU member states to review reports on Agenda 2063 implementation, institutional financing, regional integration and preparations for the Eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.

The AU has also placed water and sanitation at the centre of its 2026 continental theme. That focus comes as many African countries face rising pressure from climate variability, urban growth, weak infrastructure and persistent gaps in access to safe water and sanitation services.

Development financing is another major concern. African governments continue to face high borrowing costs, constrained fiscal space and fragmented project preparation, even as the continent seeks to finance infrastructure, industrialisation and social development priorities.

The session is also expected to shape Africa’s engagement with the G20 and other global forums. The practical test will be whether member states can move beyond broad declarations and agree on coordinated positions around financing reform, regional delivery and continental institutions.

Because the meeting is ongoing, proposals under discussion should not be treated as adopted decisions. Final outcomes will depend on the official communiqué and the conclusions of the Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.
