Nedbank has reinforced its plans to expand in East Africa as it pursues the acquisition of a majority stake in Kenya’s NCBA Group.
The South African lender has agreed to acquire about 66% of NCBA in a transaction valued at roughly R13.9 billion, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.
During its latest results cycle, Nedbank said the transaction is intended to give it greater exposure to East Africa’s banking, infrastructure and digital-finance markets.
NCBA brings a regional banking platform
NCBA operates across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, with additional digital-finance activities in other African markets. The group has built a strong position in retail and corporate banking while also developing digital channels that reach customers beyond conventional branch networks.
Nedbank has identified East Africa as a strategic growth region and has pointed to opportunities in infrastructure finance, renewable energy, resources and digital banking as part of the rationale for the transaction.
The acquisition would significantly expand Nedbank’s direct presence outside Southern Africa if completed. It would also create a larger regional banking platform linking South African capital and corporate-banking capabilities with NCBA’s East African network.
The transaction has not yet closed and remains subject to approval by the relevant regulators. Until completion, NCBA continues to operate independently.
