Spain have won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium.
The match remained goalless through 90 minutes before substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute. The victory gives Spain their second World Cup title, following their first triumph in 2010.
Spain controlled much of the contest and created the stronger attacking moments, while Argentina defended deeply and sought to contain a side that had arrived in the final after eliminating France in the semi-finals. The breakthrough eventually came in extra time, when Spain’s substitutes added greater pace and directness to the attack.
The result completes an impressive tournament run for Spain. They beat Austria in the Round of 32, Portugal in the Round of 16, Belgium in the quarter-finals and France in the semi-finals before overcoming the defending champions in the final.
Argentina had been seeking to retain the trophy they won in 2022, but Spain’s defensive organisation and greater control in midfield limited their opportunities. For Spain, the title reinforces the strength of a generation that had already won the 2024 European Championship.
