The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has announced the election of Sidi Ould Tah as its ninth president, signaling a new chapter for one of Africa’s most influential financial institutions.
Sidi Ould Tah was elected by the AfDB’s Board of Governors, a body consisting of finance ministers, economy ministers, and central bank governors from the Bank Group’s 81 regional and non-regional member countries. The Board of Governors is the highest decision-making authority within the AfDB.
Tah is set to officially assume office on September 1, 2025. His term will span five years, succeeding the two-term presidency of Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, who has steered the Bank since 2015.
Tah’s appointment comes at a pivotal time, as Africa faces significant economic and development challenges. His leadership will be closely watched for how it shapes the Bank’s strategic direction, particularly in supporting sustainable development, infrastructure investment, climate resilience, and youth empowerment across the continent.
