Lemohang Mosese Takes Lesotho Story of Memory and Exile to Global Audiences

Lesotho filmmaker Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese’s Ancestral Visions of the Future has reached MUBI audiences, bringing a deeply personal African story of memory, exile and belonging to international viewers.

Lesotho filmmaker Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese is taking a deeply personal story of memory, exile and belonging to international audiences with Ancestral Visions of the Future, now reaching viewers through global film platform MUBI.

The 88-minute film draws on the landscapes of Lesotho and Mosese’s own experiences, combining poetic narration with reflections on childhood, his mother, cinema and displacement.

Lesotho at the centre of a personal cinematic journey

MUBI describes the film as a journey of rediscovery in which images of Lesotho are interwoven with memories of childhood, exile and the filmmaker’s relationship with home.

For a country whose film industry receives relatively limited international exposure, the film’s wider distribution gives Lesotho a distinctive place within the growing global audience for African cinema.

Mosese has previously attracted international attention with This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection, his acclaimed 2019 drama set in Lesotho. That film centred on an elderly widow resisting the displacement of her village and became an important international showcase for filmmaking connected to the southern African kingdom.

African stories and global distribution

The international availability of Ancestral Visions of the Future also highlights the role streaming and specialist cinema platforms can play in taking African films beyond festival circuits and into homes across multiple markets.

Rather than presenting Lesotho merely as a backdrop, Mosese’s work places its landscape, memory and questions of identity at the centre of the story. The result contributes to a broader movement of African filmmakers using highly personal narratives to engage international audiences without separating their work from local histories and cultural experience.

Ancestral Visions of the Future is directed by Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese and is listed by MUBI as a France-Lesotho production.
