Accra, Ghana – December 9, 2024
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has officially declared former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner of the 2024 presidential election. Mahama secured 56.55% of the vote, defeating Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 41.61%.
This victory marks a remarkable return to power for Mahama, whose tenure as president between 2012 and 2016 was followed by a loss to Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 election. His campaign, built around promises of economic recovery and governance reforms, resonated with voters amid Ghana’s most severe economic challenges in decades.
The election, held on December 7, 2024, saw a voter turnout of 60.9%, reflecting the active participation of Ghanaians in shaping the nation’s future. International observer missions, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the European Union, commended the Electoral Commission for conducting a credible, transparent, and peaceful process. Despite initial apprehensions over logistical challenges, the Electoral Commission deployed advanced digital systems to enhance the collation and announcement of results. This contributed to an efficient and timely declaration of the outcome.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, in a concession speech on December 8, congratulated Mahama on his victory, stating: “The people have spoken, and as a nation, we must respect their choice. I wish President-Elect Mahama success in his efforts to lead Ghana forward.”
Ghana’s 2024 elections were heavily influenced by the nation’s economic climate. High inflation, a depreciating currency, and rising unemployment rates had left many Ghanaians frustrated with the status quo. In addition to the presidential win, the NDC secured a parliamentary majority, claiming over 150 seats compared to the NPP’s 99 seats, with a handful of constituencies yet to be confirmed. This significant gain positions the NDC to pursue its legislative agenda without major opposition roadblocks, further consolidating Mahama’s mandate. John Dramani Mahama’s return to power represents a critical juncture in Ghana’s political and economic trajectory. As the nation transitions to new leadership, the world watches Ghana reaffirm its status as a beacon of democracy in Africa. While challenges lie ahead, the resilience and optimism of the Ghanaian people remain unwavering, promising a brighter path forward.
