ACCRA, Ghana — October 28, 2025.

Ghana has taken another bold step toward malaria elimination with a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Vestergaard Sàrl, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (University of Ghana), and the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) under the Ministry of Health.

The agreement is a significant milestone in advancing country-led research and innovation for malaria control and elimination, reinforcing Ghana’s leadership in regional health research and its drive for self-sufficiency in public health solutions.

Ghana records more than 6.5 million malaria cases annually, ranking among the 11 “High Burden to High Impact” countries identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) (source). The new MoU will strengthen research collaboration, vector control strategies, and knowledge transfer, enabling evidence-based decision-making in the fight against malaria.

The partnership focuses on entomological surveillance, insecticide resistance management, and operational research on vector control, alongside capacity building for Ghanaian scientists and field experts.

“Through this MoU with Vestergaard and the NMEP, we are confident that our collective efforts will significantly advance the goal to eliminate malaria in Ghana and the African region,” said Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

Hilarius Paul Asiwome Kosi Abiwu, National Programme Manager of the Ghana NMEP, added: “This MoU signifies a united front in our commitment to reduce the burden of malaria and move closer to elimination through strategic partnership.”

Vestergaard CEO Amar Ali commended Ghana’s leadership, noting that the company’s 14-year collaboration with Noguchi has been “vital in developing and testing our long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets.” He added:

“We pledge continued support to save lives and protect livelihoods from the devastating impacts of malaria in Ghana and across sub-Saharan Africa.”

Founded in Denmark and headquartered in Switzerland, Vestergaard (www.vestergaard.com) is known for its PermaNet® mosquito nets — a key tool in global malaria elimination efforts. The company operates research facilities in Ghana and has been a certified B Corporation since 2021.

Established in 1979, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (noguchi.ug.edu.gh) remains Ghana’s leading biomedical research center, supporting national and regional health priorities in infectious diseases, diagnostics, and public health innovation.
