Ghana kept their hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup alive after fighting back to beat Côte d’Ivoire in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations World Cup play-off on Thursday.
The Black Queens entered the play-off after missing out on direct qualification through the WAFCON semi-finals, leaving the additional qualification route as their opportunity to stay in the race for Brazil 2027.
Ghana respond after falling behind
Côte d’Ivoire took the initiative, but Ghana recovered to turn the contest around and secure the victory. The result extends Ghana’s World Cup campaign rather than confirming qualification outright, an important distinction as the Black Queens continue through the qualification process.
CAF described the performance as a fightback that kept Ghana’s World Cup dream alive, with the victory ensuring the Black Queens remain in contention for a place at the global tournament.
World Cup opportunity remains
The play-off route has given teams that did not secure direct World Cup qualification through the latter stages of WAFCON another opportunity to continue their campaigns. For Ghana, Thursday’s result means the journey is not over.
The Black Queens have been seeking a return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup, having previously represented Africa at the tournament. Their latest victory keeps that objective within reach as attention shifts to the next stage of qualification.
African qualification race continues
Ghana’s result came on the same day South Africa defeated Nigeria in the other World Cup play-off, meaning both Ghana and Banyana Banyana remain alive in the qualification race.
The developments add another layer to an eventful WAFCON campaign as African teams compete for places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
