EBID Commits More Than $417 Million to Infrastructure, Healthcare and Mining Across West Africa

EBID has approved more than US$417 million for five projects spanning transport infrastructure, healthcare, housing and mining across West Africa.

The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) has approved more than US$417 million in financing for five projects spanning transport infrastructure, healthcare, housing and mining across West Africa.

The financing package was approved by EBID’s Board of Directors at its 99th ordinary session and includes one of the largest allocations for a section of the Trans-Saharan Highway in Nigeria.

US$260 million for Trans-Saharan Highway

According to information published by African Business in partnership with EBID, US$260 million has been approved for the development of a 123-kilometre section of the Trans-Saharan Highway in Nigeria.

The road forms part of a much larger transport corridor intended to improve connectivity between West Africa and North Africa. Investment in the Nigerian section therefore carries implications beyond domestic road construction, particularly for regional movement of goods and people.

Healthcare and other infrastructure financing

The package also includes €80 million for a 150-bed regional hospital in Côte d’Ivoire. The healthcare investment adds a social-infrastructure component to a financing portfolio otherwise strongly focused on physical infrastructure and productive sectors.

Other approvals cover housing and public infrastructure projects, broadening the geographic and sectoral reach of the package.

Ghana mining project receives US$47.4 million

In Ghana, EBID approved US$47.4 million for the Black Volta Gold Project. The investment places mining and productive-sector development alongside transport and social infrastructure within the latest portfolio of approvals.

For EBID, the package reflects its wider mandate to finance projects that support economic development and regional integration among ECOWAS member states. Transport links, healthcare facilities and productive investments can each influence the ability of West African economies to deepen domestic value creation and cross-border commerce.

Regional development finance

The scale of the approvals also highlights the growing role of regional development finance institutions in mobilising long-term capital for projects that can be difficult to fund entirely through national budgets or conventional commercial lending.

The Trans-Saharan Highway investment is particularly significant in that context. Better transport connectivity can reduce travel times and logistics constraints, although the eventual economic impact will depend on completion of connecting infrastructure and the efficiency of border and trade systems along the wider corridor.
