The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic flame has begun its journey across Senegal as preparations accelerate for the first Olympic sporting event to be held on African soil.
The flame tour is scheduled to travel through more than 30 locations, taking the build-up to the Youth Olympic Games beyond the main competition venues and into communities across the host country.
For Senegal, the relay marks another visible stage in preparations for an event carrying significance beyond sport. Dakar 2026 will place an Olympic competition in Africa for the first time, giving Senegal and the wider continent an opportunity to demonstrate sporting, organisational and cultural capacity on a global stage.
A national journey before a continental first
The flame tour is designed to connect communities across Senegal with the Games before competition begins. Its route combines sporting mobilisation with cultural and civic activities, extending the identity of Dakar 2026 beyond the capital.
The Youth Olympic Games bring together young athletes from around the world and combine elite competition with educational and cultural programmes. Hosting the event gives Senegal an unusual platform to present both its sporting ambitions and its cultural identity to an international audience.
