Kampala — August 26, 2025

In a pulsating semi-final at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN 2025), Morocco emerged victorious against defending champions Senegal by edging out a 5–3 win in a nail-biting penalties shootout, following a 1–1 draw in regulation time. The win sets up a historic final against Madagascar, who also made remarkable progress in the tournament.

A Tactical Battle That Go Down to the Wire

The match brought intense moments: Senegal struck first via a towering header from Layousse Samb in the 16th minute. But Morocco responded swiftly—Sabir Bougrine unleashed a sublime volley in the 23rd minute to level the score, electrifying the crowd. Despite late Senegal pressure, the match held to penalties, where Morocco’s composure secured their place in the final.

The Stakes Ahead

This semi-final represented a first-ever CHAN face-off between Morocco (2018 & 2020 champions) and Senegal, showcasing two of the competition’s most formidable teams. Morocco now chase a record third CHAN title.

What’s Next?

Morocco will face Madagascar, a rising underdog making their debut final after beating Sudan in the other semi-final. This matchup promises a tension-filled spectacle in Nairobi at the Moi International Sports Centre.
