Cameroon’s Achu Culinary Tradition Moves Closer to UNESCO Heritage Recognition

Cameroon’s Achu nomination enters UNESCO’s 2026 evaluation process

Cameroon’s traditional Achu culinary practice is under evaluation for possible inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2026.

UNESCO’s Regional Office for Central Africa highlighted the nomination during a July gathering in Yaoundé focused on traditional gastronomy, cultural journalism and the safeguarding of food heritage. The organisation’s official records list “Achu: an expression of the traditional culinary art of Cameroon” among the files being processed for the 2026 cycle.

More than a food tradition

Achu is tied to community identity, agricultural knowledge, preparation techniques and social practice. Its nomination therefore raises broader questions about how culinary heritage can be protected without reducing it to a tourism product or separating it from the communities that sustain it.

UNESCO’s nomination materials show that the file remains under consideration and has not yet been inscribed. Any cultural or commercial benefits would depend on the outcome of the evaluation and on how Cameroon supports safeguarding measures at community level.

The development opportunity and the safeguards required

Recognition could strengthen cultural visibility, support local food systems and create opportunities in tourism and the creative economy. However, the value of inscription would ultimately depend on whether communities remain central to how the tradition is documented, promoted and transmitted.
