Cameroon Moves to Make AfCFTA Trade Rules Easier for SMEs to Navigate

Cameroon is moving to make African Continental Free Trade Area procedures easier for businesses to understand as the country works with the UN Economic Commission for Africa to improve access to trade information.

A two-day validation workshop in Douala on 26 and 27 August is reviewing trade-information tools designed to help businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, women and young entrepreneurs, navigate market-access requirements and AfCFTA procedures more effectively.

Information gaps remain a trade barrier

Reducing tariffs is only one part of expanding intra-African trade. Businesses also need clear information on customs procedures, product requirements, documentation, regulatory rules and the practical steps required to enter new markets.

For smaller firms, those information costs can be significant. Large companies are generally better able to absorb the cost of legal, compliance and logistics expertise, while smaller exporters may struggle to identify which rules apply or where to find reliable guidance.

The Cameroon initiative is therefore aimed at one of the less visible barriers to AfCFTA implementation: making trade rules understandable and usable at company level.

Turning AfCFTA rules into practical market access

The validation process is intended to ensure that the tools reflect the needs of businesses before wider deployment. UNECA’s African Trade Policy Centre has been working with governments and private-sector stakeholders across the continent to support implementation of the agreement.

If the tools are adopted effectively, they could help reduce the time and uncertainty involved in understanding trade procedures. Their actual impact, however, will depend on uptake, accessibility and whether the information remains accurate as rules evolve.

Cameroon’s effort reflects a broader shift in AfCFTA implementation from treaty-level commitments toward the practical systems businesses need to trade across borders.
