Cairo Hosts 12th African University Games as Student Athletes Gather From Across Africa

Cairo is hosting the 12th African University Games from 9 to 16 August, bringing together student athletes from universities across the continent for a multi-sport competition spanning 18 disciplines.

Egypt’s State Information Service confirmed the event dates and preparations, while Ain Shams University’s official event briefing says organisers planned for around 2,000 athletes and officials from more than 70 universities and 25 African countries.

A continent-wide university sports event

The programme includes football, basketball and volleyball alongside athletics, table tennis, badminton, chess, karate, taekwondo, swimming, tennis, modern pentathlon, futsal, judo, squash, wrestling, fencing and padel.

Competitions are being distributed across several venues in Greater Cairo, with organisers using dedicated sports zones and athlete accommodation to manage the scale of the event.

The African University Games are organised under the umbrella of the African University Sports Federation and are intended to combine high-level student competition with cultural exchange and cooperation between African universities.

University sport as a development pathway

University sport plays an important role in athlete development because it allows young competitors to combine education with structured competition. For many athletes, university championships provide a bridge between school-level sport and senior national or international competition.

Egypt’s Ministry of Higher Education has also linked the games to youth development, university cooperation and broader efforts to strengthen sports participation across higher education institutions.

Organisers have said the event is intended to go beyond competition by creating opportunities for students to interact across national and cultural lines, strengthening networks among African universities and promoting a shared continental identity.

Cairo expands its role as a university sports host

Egypt has invested heavily in preparing venues, athlete accommodation, medical support and operational systems for the games. The event is also part of a wider strategy to position Cairo as a regional hub for university sport and large-scale student competitions.

The 2026 edition gives participating universities a platform to compete across both team and individual sports while also offering organisers a test of Egypt’s ability to host a large continental university event to international standards.

With competition running through 16 August, the next several days are expected to produce medal results across multiple sports, providing opportunities for universities and countries to build visibility beyond the traditional professional sports circuit.
