Botswana delivered a historic performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, storming to gold in the men’s 4×400 metres relay with a time of 2:57.76.

Anchored by Busang Collen Kebinatshipi, the newly crowned 400m world champion, the team held off a strong challenge from the United States, who took silver in 2:57.88, and South Africa, who claimed bronze in 2:58.23.

This is the first time an African nation has won gold in the 4×400m relay at the World Championships, a breakthrough that cements Botswana’s status as a rising sprinting powerhouse.

For Kebinatshipi, it capped a dream week after his individual 400m gold. For his teammates, it was a validation of years of work in building depth in Botswana’s quarter-mile programme.

With two medals from the individual event and now a world title in the relay, Botswana leaves Tokyo with its greatest-ever performance on the global stage.
