Ghana international Antoine Semenyo has made history after becoming the first Ghanaian footballer to be named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
The Manchester City forward was selected by his fellow professionals following an outstanding 2025/26 Premier League campaign across Bournemouth and Manchester City. Semenyo finished the league season with 17 goals and four assists, establishing a new single-season Premier League scoring benchmark for a Ghanaian player.
Historic recognition for Ghana
Semenyo’s inclusion is particularly significant because the PFA Team of the Year is decided by professional footballers, recognising the players their peers judged among the best performers in the division.
According to reporting on the 2026 PFA selection, no Ghanaian had previously been named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. That gives Semenyo a distinction that eluded several celebrated Ghanaian players who have competed in England’s top flight over the Premier League era.
A career-best Premier League season
Semenyo began the campaign at Bournemouth, scoring 10 Premier League goals before moving to Manchester City during the January transfer window. He adapted quickly at City and ended the campaign with 17 league goals and four assists across the two clubs.
His performances also earned him a place among the nominees for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year. The individual award ultimately went to Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, but Semenyo’s selection in the peer-voted Team of the Year capped the strongest Premier League season of his career.
Semenyo had already received recognition during the season, including the PFA Premier League Fans’ Player of the Month award for September 2025 and the Premier League Player of the Month award for February 2026.
From Bournemouth to Manchester City
The Ghanaian joined Manchester City from Bournemouth in January after developing into one of the Premier League’s most productive wide forwards. His rise has taken him from Bristol City and loan spells in the English lower leagues to a place among the players recognised by their peers as the Premier League’s best.
For Ghana, the PFA honour adds another milestone to a season in which Semenyo’s goalscoring performances have placed him firmly among the country’s most prominent players in European club football.
