African Union Addresses Education Challenges in Africa

AU

The African Union (AU) has declared 2024 as the “Year of Education,” focusing on building resilient education systems to increase access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning across the continent. This initiative is part of the AU’s broader efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

During the 37th AU Summit, various strategies were discussed to address the persistent educational challenges faced by African countries. These strategies include enhancing teacher training, improving educational infrastructure, and integrating technology into the learning process to make education more accessible and effective.

The AU, in collaboration with UNESCO, is co-chairing the technical working group responsible for developing a comprehensive roadmap of activities for 2024. This collaboration aims to mobilize governments, development partners, and stakeholders to rethink and transform education systems in Africa, ensuring they are fit for the 21st century.
