Joint naval exercises involving China, Russia and Iran have commenced off the coast of South Africa, described by officials as a BRICS Plus operation focused on maritime security, anti-piracy and cooperation among participating navies.
The drills have drawn international and domestic attention, including criticism from some local political opponents who argue that inclusion of sanctioned nations — particularly Russia and Iran — complicates South Africa’s diplomatic posture amid broader geopolitical tensions.
South African authorities, however, maintain that the exercises are routine and aimed at enhancing interoperability and maritime safety.
