Ivory Coast’s “Coalition for Peaceful Change” (CAP Côte d’Ivoire) has issued a strong call for comprehensive electoral reform in advance of the pivotal presidential election scheduled for October 25, 2025. This demand comes as the opposition seeks to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.
Among the key reforms sought by the recently formed coalition are a thorough revision of the electoral lists and the detailed publication of election results by individual polling station, as reported by Africanews.com. CAP Côte d’Ivoire has also emphasized the necessity for “political dialogue” to address concerns surrounding the impartiality of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). The coalition alleges that the IEC has displayed bias in its decisions regarding the electoral lists.
On Monday, the coalition announced its inaugural meeting, set to take place on May 31, signaling a unified front in its push for electoral integrity. Formed in March of this year, CAP Côte d’Ivoire unites several opposition parties, notably excluding the movement led by former President Laurent Gbagbo.
The electoral landscape has been further complicated by the removal of several opposition candidates from the electoral lists. Tidjane Thiam, the coalition’s coordinator, was among those excluded following a controversial court ruling in April that revoked his Ivorian citizenship in 2022. Other candidates, such as Laurent Gbagbo and Charles Blé Goudé, were barred due to judicial convictions. The definitive electoral list, outlining all eligible candidates, is expected to be released on June 20.
